Bio

Guest solo panellist for BBC Radio Stoke, Shropshire, Hereford and Worcestershire answering gardening questions for their Sunday gardening show.

Having started a small garden club in my village and having networked with hundreds of garden clubs around the country, I now recognise the difficulties that clubs face. Quite a few clubs are struggling and a number have unfortunately closed down. Clubs can often be the lifeblood of small towns/villages, but the future of clubs is in severe danger. So I’ve made it my personal mission to ensure no more garden clubs close, and instead that they are given the tools, knowledge and resources to be able to grow, thrive, flourish and recruit many new younger members. So I’m working on a project to change the current dynamic of garden clubs, so they modernise and become relevant to what people really want these days. I am creating a ‘Charter’ that clubs will sign up to in order to demonstrate they are willing to make the relevant changes and to guide them into what needs doing. I’m intending on created a ‘National Novice Day’ event that will hopefully encourage complete beginners into gardening. I am also preparing to develop a national competition for towns and villages around the country to be able to apply to have a new garden club setup in their village.

Testimonials

“ I got to know Indy nearly 5 years ago when he formed the Tender Shoots Garden Club Network in 2020 during lockdown. All the things he’s achieved are amazing. Most memorable being at the RHS Bridgewater Forum in 2022. Indy gave several short talks to explain how running clubs could be simplified and made less stressful as he was aware that many clubs were folding, as leaders would not come forward. Indy provided simple and practical ideas and has continued to do so ever since nationwide. Encourages gardening groups to setup, to continue, and to be appealing to all.”
Caroline Sanderson Chairperson Wolverhampton Horticultural Society

“Indy has created the environment and facility for garden clubs from across the country to work together to develop, improve and modernise their clubs for the benefit of their current and future members.
Nina Willis Whittingham, Roots & Shoots Gardening Club

“Indy has boundless energy and enthusiasm, especially when it comes to encouraging new and younger gardeners”.
Peter, secretary to Wickham Bishops Horticultural Club

“The Tender Shoots Network created by Indy is a unique and valuable tool for Horticultural Societies. As a new Speaker Secretary I found the directory of speakers developed by Indy to be hugely helpful. This was further enhanced by the network of club members that Indy has built all willing to provide advice and recommendations to help me in my new role.
